Not everyone will be jealous of the BMW X6 M 2020 fastback roof line, but no one will make fun of their dual-turbo V-8, which breathes fire. It is responsible for up to 617 horsepower and an escape note that will lift the hair on the back of your neck. Based on the equally strident BMW X5 M, the X6 equivalent is also crazy-fast and able to keep up with some legitimate sports cars. It is look-at-me design is offset by a luxurious interior and a wide range of desirable features. Unfortunately, most SUV enthusiasts and buyers will not be able to pay the six-figure price of the Bimmer. Still, the 2020 X6 M is the pinnacle of performance for this body style race.
While the regular BMW X6 is in its fourth generation, the high-performance BMW X6 M 2020 has just embarked on its third. It is difficult to distinguish between the new model and the one it replaces, but after a more detailed inspection there are notable improvements. The 2020 iteration is more powerful for one, adding between 33 and 50 horsepower. His body received a subtle makeover but a sharper appearance, and his cabin has been revised with a modernized aesthetic and better technology.
X6 M: $ 109,595
X6 M Competition: $ 118,595
It is difficult to understand how less practicality can have a higher price. Still, the BMW X6 M 2020 costs $ 3,500 more than its square counterpart, the X5 M. Our prefer the less expensive body style, but the 6 certainly attracts more attention. Although neither version will reach the showrooms until the spring of 2020, we believe that the Competition model is the one to be achieved. Not only does it have 617 horsepower, 17 more than normal, but it also has better standard equipment. This includes a sports exhaust, an exclusive Track mode and 22-inch (21-inch) rear wheels wrapped with wider rubber. The X6 M Competition also has more elegant leather upholstery and knee padding in the center console to reduce punishment during hard corners.
Interior, Comfort and Cargo
Sportsmanship and luxury collide within the 2020 X6 M, which features carbon fiber details and standard leather upholstery. There is also a lack of high-tech features thanks to a fully digital 12.3-inch gauge cluster and a large front display. These are accompanied by items such as ambient interior lighting, front massage seats with heated and cooled surfaces, heated rear seats and more. The cubby interior storage is highlighted with a covered container under the center stack and a useful center console tray. While its coupé-like profile does not affect how comfortable it is for passengers in the front and rear seats, the sloping roof line reduces the cargo area. The traditional X5 M provides 34 cubic feet behind the back row, while the X6 M has only 27 cubes.
Infotainment and connectivity
A great 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system adorns the center of the dashboard in every 2020 X6 M. It uses the latest BMW iDrive software and can also be operated through hand gestures, voice commands and a controller swivel mounted on the center console. Although Android Auto is not available at all, other popular features such as Apple CarPlay integration and a Harman / Kardon sound system are standard. There are also individual options for a Bowers & Wilkins stereo and a backseat entertainment system.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
Equipped with the same strident engine that feeds the bmw m5 sedan, every 2020 X6 M is motivated by a 4.4-liter V-8 double turbo. It produces 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque in its natural state and 617 ponies in the improved version of the Competition. The engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission that feeds a dynamic four-wheel drive system. This transmission can be told to distribute the power to all four wheels for maximum traction or that most of it is sent back for sharper handling. In addition to its selectable drive modes, including customizable settings that can be activated via buttons mounted on the steering wheel, the X6 M even features adjustable brake pedal feedback. The BMW also has standard adaptive shock absorbers and a set of 21-inch wheels, but a pair of 22-inch tires on wider tires can be installed in the rear (they are standard in the X6 M Competition). Since we have not yet driven any variant, we cannot say how these Bimmers will ride and drive.
Fuel economy and real-world MPG
Until EPA releases fuel economy ratings for the 2020 X6 M, we can only speculate how efficient it will be in the city and on the highway. The less powerful 2020 BMW X5 M50i, which uses a less powerful version of the V-8 dual-turbo M-model, has estimates of 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. We would bet that the X6 M will have similar qualifications, but we will not know for sure until the government publishes its official figures.
Safety features and driver assistance
The 2020 X5 M has not been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, each model has abundant driver assistance technology, such as blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, as well as additional options. Key security features include:
> Standad front collision warning and automated emergency braking
> Standad lane departure warning and lane maintenance assistance
> Adaptive cruise control available with stop-and-go technology
Warranty and maintenance coverage
BMW’s limited and powertrain warranty is identical to the Audi and Mercedes-Benz alternatives. It also offers better free scheduled maintenance compared to both brands, but it’s still not as good as Jaguar coverage.
> The limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
> The powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
> Free scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles
