The BMW X5 M 2020 is what happens when bean counters want SUV sales and enthusiasts will glorify anything with enormous power. Although we wouldn’t call the culmination a perfect storm, the powerful X5 M’s double-turbo V-8 produces rapid acceleration and thunderous sounds. Combine that with the special tuning of the BMW M division and you have one of the wildest crossovers on the planet. Apart from its high price tag, the X5 M has few weaknesses. Its interior is spacious and friendly, with space for up to five and space for all your things. A range of high-tech and luxury options also verifies that the 2020 X5 M is as sophisticated as it is super powerful.
The new BMW X5 M 2020 represents the third generation of the sportiest X5 SUV of the Bavarian car manufacturer. It is more powerful than the version it replaces, with between 33 and 50 additional horsepower than the outgoing X5 M. The rest of the changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary. Even so, its restructured sheet, its improved interior and its modernized technology help make the latest X5 M better than ever.
X5 M: $ 106,095
X5 M Competition: $ 115,095
While the 2020 X5 M will not go on sale until spring 2020, we already know that our money would go towards the slightly more sporty competition model. In addition to additional power, it comes standard with a more bustling exhaust system, an exclusive Track mode and a rear set of larger wheels and wider tires. Similarly, the X5 M Competition comes standard with more pleasant leather upholstery and adds padding on the sides of the center console to avoid bruising on the knee during hard turns.
Interior, Comfort and Cargo
The interior of the X5 M is exquisitely equipped and equipped with countless desirable features. A cluster of 12.3-inch fully digital caliper rests behind its leather-wrapped steering wheel that also houses a pair of gearshift levers and red driving mode buttons. Ambient interior lighting, a large front screen, a heated steering wheel and front armrests, and spicy materials are standard. Those who want more elegant leather upholstery, front massage seats with heated and cooled cushions, heated rear seats and more can add them for additional coins. There is no shortage of passenger space in the front and rear seats, and its cargo area is large enough to accommodate 11 handbags behind the back row.
Infotainment and connectivity
Each 2020 X5 M has a loaded infotainment system and countless connectivity features. The company’s iDrive software is displayed through a 12.3-inch touch screen that can also be controlled by hand gestures, voice commands and a rotary controller in the center console. While the integration of Apple CarPlay and a Harman / Kardon audio system are standard, a Bowers & Wilkins stereo and backseat entertainment system are individual options. Android Auto is completely absent.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
A monster hides under the hood of each 2020 X5 M. It has two turbochargers that force the air supply into a 4.4-liter engine that generates 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The improved X5 M Competition further pumps another 17 ponies. Both Bimmers use an eight-speed automatic transmission and a variable four-wheel drive system. The latter allows the driver to choose between maximum four-wheel drive or added agility in the rear skewed mode. A set of 21-inch wheels and adaptive dampers are standard equipment. However, those who want a stepped set of rollers with 22 inches in the rear also have that option. We will not know how well this high-powered SUV is mounted or how athletic it feels behind the wheel until we drive one.
Fuel economy and real-world MPG
Since neither BMW nor the EPA have released fuel economy ratings for the 2020 X5 M, we don’t know how efficient it will be. A tuned version of the 4.4-liter V-8 M double turbo is also equipped with the 2020 X5 M50i, which is rated at 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Although we would not expect the full-fledged M model to be more efficient than that, we will have to wait to try one on our 200-mile real-world route to confirm.
Safety features and driver assistance
The 2020 X5 M has not been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Together with standard driver assistance technology, such as the frontal collision warning and automated emergency braking, the X5 M offers more optional assistance. Key security features include:
> Standard bliind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert
> Standad lane departure warning and lane maintenance assistance
> Adaptive cruise control available with stop-and-go technology
Warranty and maintenance coverage
BMW offers a competitive warranty that aligns with the limited and powertrain coverages offered by rivals such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz. While its free scheduled maintenance is not as large as Jaguar’s, it is better than any other competitor.
> The limit warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
> The powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
> Free scheduled maintenance is covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles
