The Coupes meet the needs of car buyers in the market for something that is more elegant (and less practical) than a sedan, and the X4 occupies a similar role in the BMW SUV line. The BMW X4 2020 is a fastback version of the BMW X3, and features a sporty design with a roof line similar to a coupe. In relation to the X3, the X4 provides less cargo space; It is a better fit for singles and couples than for those who face the carrying responsibilities that may come with parenthood. With its athletic driving, the X4 is an entertaining companion, whether driven by the blacktop road or through the city streets.
Just out of its 2019 redesign, the X4 moves to 2020 with minimal changes. The biggest news is that the M40i’s six-cylinder bi-turbo receives a serious boost in power, from 355 to 382. The base models add the BMW Comfort Access system as standard equipment. This system allows you to access the vehicle without removing the keychain from your pocket.
xDrive 30i: $ 52,095
M40i: $ 61,995
The M40i comes with the two most powerful X4 engines available. Still, there is a lot of growl offered with the power plant of the xDrive 30i, and we imagine that this more affordable model will be a satisfactory option for most buyers. The xDrive 30i comes standard with exterior features such as 19-inch wheels, windshield wipers with rain sensor, panoramic sunroof and folding side mirrors with heating. Inside the cabin, you will find amenities such as sports seats with electric adjustment, automatic climate control and an automatic dimming rearview mirror.
Interior, Comfort and Cargo
Clean modernity is the name of the game inside the premium cabin of the X4. The central stack looks a bit like a superhero’s shield, and is located under an elegant floating touch screen. The 35.5 inches of space for the rear legs of the X4 are less than what you will get with its most pragmatic relative, the X3 (36.4 inches). In addition, the X4 forces you to make some commitments when it comes to cargo space. This model provides only 19 cubic feet of cargo capacity with all seats in place and 51 cubic feet with the rear seats lowered. The X3 is much better in this area, providing 29 cubic feet of space for your belongings behind the second row and 63 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Infotainment and connectivity
The X4 base model comes with HD radio and a 12-speaker sound system. The capacity of Apple CarPlay is standard with a one-year test, and this allows you to connect the vehicle without problems with your iPhone and iPad. Unfortunately, Android Auto is not offered and BMW will charge you for CarPlay after your trial period is over. An integrated navigation system is standard, and the infotainment system comes with a 10.3-inch screen. The X4 Executive package available incorporates an ingenious gesture control function.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
The 2020 BMW X4 xDrive 30i base gets its motivation from a 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder engine that generates 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. In our time on the track, this model sprinted from zero to 60 mph in a respectable 6.1 seconds.
If you’re in the mood for something higher octane, the X4 M40i will be an ideal fit. This model is equipped with a dual turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces a power of 382 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. The BMW X4 M40i rushes from zero to 60 mph in a short 4.2 seconds, according to our track tests, and its engine grade is as impressive as its acceleration. Launch control is standard.
Both settings come with an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels. Regardless of the X4 you choose, you will receive an SUV that combines an enthusiastic DRIVING with a driving quality that is easy to live with.
Fuel economy and real-world MPG
The EPA estimates that the 2020 X4 xDrive 30i reaches a mileage of 23/28 mpg city / highway. That is an improvement in fuel economy offered by rivals such as the Jaguar F-Pace (up to 22/27 mpg). In our tests, we observed road fuel economy of 33 mpg.
With the X4 M40i, EPA’s estimated fuel economy stands at 21/27 mpg. We were able to achieve a real-world fuel economy of 28 mpg on the road during our time with the SUV.
Safety features and driver assistance
The BMW X4 2020 have not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). There are plenty of optional driver assistance features available, but the list of standard amenities in this area is sparse. Key security features include:
> Standard Front Collision Warning
> Standard Automated Low Speed Brake
> Adaptive Cruise Control Available
> Lane Maintenance Assistance Available
> Surround view camera available
> Blind Spot Monitoring Available
Warranty and maintenance coverage
The guarantee of the X4 is great compared to the coverage offered by the less expensive conventional models, but it is simply average when viewed alongside the protection provided by its rivals in the luxury segment. Free scheduled maintenance is provided. Not all models in this segment offer this advantage, so it is a pen on the top of the X4.
> The limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
> The powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles
> Free scheduled maintenance covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles
