BMW X3 M 2020-BMW’s heroic SUV line now has a compact offer in the form of X3 M and the X3 M Competition. Honestly, we are surprised that the masters of the M performance division have taken so long to change the already sporty suspension of the X3 with an even sportier team and fall into a more powerful engine.
Interior and Technology
Cab cutouts are as premium as the standard X3 and X3 M40i models, but feature more aggressive reinforced seats, more spicy style bits and additional standard features. The current BMW X3 M 2020 comes with a base infotainment screen of 8.8 or optional 10.3 inches, but the X3 M only offers the latter and includes navigation. Standard driver assistance features include automated emergency braking and frontal collision warning. There is plenty of space for passengers both in front and behind, as well as generous cargo capacity. Buyers of the mechanically similar X4 M will relinquish part of that space to the dramatically inclined fast-backed rear end of that model.
Engine, Ride and Drive
A turbocharged six-cylinder in-line engine produces 473 horsepower in the X3 M and 503 horsepower in the X3 M Competition. BMW claims that the zero-to-60 mph explosion will take 4.1 and 4.0 seconds, respectively; Taking into account that in our tests the 355 hp X3 M40i went from zero to 60 mph in an already fast 4.4 seconds, we believe that BMW is being conservative with its estimates. BMW released a short teaser video that highlights the snarling engine exhaust note. It remains to be seen if the X3 M will have what it takes to compete with the Porsche Macan Turbo, the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 or the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. We anticipate a comparison test in our future.
