Overview (2022 Acura MDX)
The 2022 Acura MDX is a refinement of an SUV that is already one of the best in its class. We like the improved interior quality and the most accurate handling that go hand in hand with the traditional strengths of breadth and value of the MDX. Acura is in tears updating her small line of cars and SUVs. Among them is the three-row MDX, whose recent review brings many benefits. This SUV takes its attractive style from the RDX Compact SUV and TLX Sedán, and the cab features luxury materials and features worthy of Acura’s premium badge. This basic powertrain for the front driver consists of 3.5 liters, 290 hp V-6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive is available. But select the performance-oriented Type S model and you’ll get a 3.0-liter, 355 hp turbocharged V-6 and standard all-wheel drive.
Acura redesigned the MDX by 2022, skipping the 2021 model year. The new SUV shares its style and technology with newly renovated RDX and TLX models.
Engine, transmission and performance
The new MDX uses the same 3.5-liter, 290 hp V-6 as the previous model, but the engine is now coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of a nine-speed automatic transmission. The outgoing MDX 2020 also offered a hybrid powertrain, but so far Acura has not indicated an intention to hybrid the MDX 2022. The Type S sports model is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged 355 hp V-6 and comes standard with all-wheel drive. We haven’t driven the Type S yet, but our test drive of a full-wheel drive Advance model with the standard powertrain revealed surprisingly agile handling and lively acceleration.
Interior, comfort and cargo
The 2022 Acura MDX cab has a much more premium look and feel than the interior of the 2020 model. French seam leather covers the board with high-end embellishments, and open pore wood blends with metal and piano black accents. Acura also equipped the MDX with many amenities, such as automatic dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and leather upholstery. The front seats provide support and are comfortable and can be equipped with details such as 16-way electrical adjustment and massage. The first and second rows offer plenty of space for passengers, but the third row of the MDX remains a child-only issue. Although the interior is beautifully designed and offers many comfort options, it doesn’t feel as stylish as rival cabs like the Genesis GV80 or Volvo XC90.
Infotainment and connectivity
The 2022 Acura MDX features a large 12.3-inch info screen with a touchpad controller mounted on the center console, which we regret to report is a frustrating thing to use. A 12.3-inch reconfigurable digital indicator display is also standard, as is apple carplay and Android Auto capability, dashboard navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a wireless charging platform for smartphones. An ELS Studio stereo system is included in the Technology molding, while the A-Spec and Advanced models get a 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D configuration.
Safety and driver assistance features
Acura has been adding more and more standard driver assistance technology to its cars, and the new MDX offers several desirable features. Warranty and maintenance coverage
The 2022 Acura MDX warranty package matches those of rivals such as the Buick Enclave and Lexus GX, but both brands cover the first maintenance visit, while Acura requires the owner to pay out-of-pocket for that service.
