The CLA class of Mercedes-Benz 2020 offers the unique brand of German automotive luxury at a relatively affordable price. This five-passenger subcompact car is among the most affordable models in the Mercedes line. The CLA class is a sedan, but its sloping roof gives it a coupe-like look. It offers the prepared handling you expect from a car bearing the Mercedes-Benz nameplate, and it comes with a wide selection of standard equipment. A high-performance variant, the Mercedes-AMG CLA class, is available and is reviewed separately. If you are in the market for a small luxury car with reasonable prices and premium accommodation, the CLA 2020 class should be on your list.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class model year has been redesigned. The new CLA class is longer and wider than the outgoing model, and comes with an updated infotainment system. It’s a remarkable step forward from its somewhat disappointing predecessor, offering more power and a higher level of refinement.

Interior, Comfort and Cargo
Although it is one of the cheapest models in the automaker range, the 2020 C-class features a cabin that appears to belong to a Mercedes-Benz. The center stack is clean and modern, adorned with a trio of circular vents. The front seats are pleasantly spacious, but there is limited headroom in the second row due to the car’s roof slope. This sedan provides 13.1 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s less cargo space than the outgoing model. Still, the CLA class offers more room for its equipment than a rival like the Audi A3, which provides 12.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity.
Infotainment and connectivity
The CLA class is equipped with the new Mercedes-Benz infotainment system, and features a steering wheel equipped with a touchpad and a console-mounted control pad. In general, the configuration is easy to use and configure. A 7.0-inch screen is standard, along with Bluetooth connectivity and an eight-speaker sound system. All models come with apple CarPlay and android Auto smartphone integration. The list of options includes an updated Burmester audio system and SiriusXM satellite radio.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
All 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA-class sedans are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 221 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The gears are driven by a seven-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available and Front-wheel drive is standard. Mercedes estimates that this car will dash from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. The CLA class offers handling that is sharp and polished, with a pleasantly firm brake pedal, well-calibrated steering and minimal body roll when cornering. Still, downshifts on the gearbox are occasionally awkward. Different driving modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual) give you the possibility to adapt the performance of the car to your preferences.
Fuel economy and real-world MPG
With front-wheel drive, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-class achieves EPA-rated fuel economy of 25/35 city / highway mpg. Fuel economy for four-wheel drive models comes in at 23/33 mpg. Those numbers are competitive for the segment, but you’ll get better fuel economy with the Audi A3 (up to 27/36 mpg).
Driver Assistance and Safety Features
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA class has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, this car is available with driver assistance features that can help you stay out of harm’s way on your travels. Key safety features include: Standard automated emergency brake. Assistance available for lane maintenance. Adaptive cruise control available.
