2020 MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS Review, Prices and Specs

Mercedes Benz A-Class

Basic models provide buyers with an affordable way to access a line of luxury cars, and Class A occupies this role in the Mercedes-Benz product range. This subcompact sedan is the smallest car in the automaker’s selection of vehicles; It is also the least expensive. With a long list of standard features, a premium-looking cabin, and relatively affordable prices, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class offers good value for money. Despite its small size, this sedan offers spacious rooms for passengers, with a respectable amount of rear-seat adult legroom. Note, however, that rival models offer more cargo space. Overall, this Mercedes baby shines as one of the best choices among entry-level luxury sedans. The Mercedes-Benz A-Class made its debut in the United States in the 2019 model year. It moves to 2020 without major changes.

Interior, Comfort and Cargo
With entry-level luxury models, the cabin design can sometimes be heavy on the entry level and light in luxury. That’s not the case for the A-class. This sedan has a premium-looking interior that lives up to Mercedes-Benz standards. A trio of circular vents add a decorative touch to the center stack, and the cabin can be upgraded with exclusive options like leather upholstery, heated front seats, and LED interior lighting. The front seats offer memorable comfort, and that helps make the A-class a great car for those who face long journeys. A standard folding 20/20/40 split rear seat allows you to accommodate items too large to fit in the trunk. Speaking of the trunk, Class A has a significant weakness: it is light in cargo capacity. The trunk of the car provides only 9.0 cubic feet of space for your belongings.

Infotainment and connectivity
Class A 2020 comes with standard tech features like Bluetooth phone and music streaming, HD radio and a 7-inch touchscreen. Base models also come with an eight-speaker sound system, five USB-C ports, and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto smartphone integration. As part of the available Premium package, a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen is offered. The range of optional equipment also includes SiriusXM satellite radio and a Burmester stereo.

Engine, Transmission and Performance
With the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-class, the only engine option is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard with the A220, while the A220 4Matic adds four-wheel drive. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission handles gear changes. The A220 4Matic we tested fueled from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. That’s a bit slower than an A3 we tested, which sprinted in 5.5 seconds when equipped with the top engine in the model line. We found that the front-wheel-drive class A sedans travel with less impact hardness than the heavier four-wheel-drive model. Still, both models offer ride quality that is reasonably comfortable and ready. The steering is precise, the throttle response is excellent, and there is almost no turbo lag.

Fuel economy and real-world MPG
EPA estimates that the 2020 Mercedes-Benz A220 will achieve a fuel economy of 24/35 mpg city / highway. That’s less fuel efficient than the Audi A3 (27/36 mpg), but gets better mileage than the Acura ILX (24/34 mpg).

Driver Assistance and Safety Features
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz A-Class has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Though light on standard driver assistance features, a wide range of these amenities are offered as optional equipment. Key security features include:
Blind spot monitoring available. Lane keeping assistance available. Adaptive cruise control available.

Warranty and maintenance coverage
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2020 is merely adequate when it comes to the scope of its warranty coverage. You’ll get a longer powertrain warranty from rivals like the Acura ILX. The limited warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles. The powertrain warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles. There is no courtesy scheduled maintenance.
