The 2020 Mazda CX-8 is based closely on the smaller CX-5, stretched to fit in an additional row of seats. But the finished product is much more than a CX-5 “L”, receiving its own unique version of Mazda’s characteristic design language, its own equipment and everything else that goes into an independent model.
Mazda only launched the CX-8 a couple of years ago, so the revisions implemented here are quite modest in scope. Buyers (in countries where it is sold) can now specify front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with the naturally aspirated or turbocharged versions of the Mazda 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine or with the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel.
The AWD models also obtain a new Off-Road Traction Assist system, the interior fit has been updated (in the available configurations of six or seven passengers), the infotainment screen has increased from seven inches to eight, there is a new roof option Sliding and the equipment has been reviewed at different levels of finishing. That is the long and short of it, but then Mazda did not need to do much with a still relatively fresh model in the market and was named Car of the Year by the Japan Auto Hall of Fame. Order books open at the end of next month.
